Congress leaves unemployed Americans in the cold

November 11th, 2011. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans will see their federal unemployment benefits expire this week, and millions more by the end of the year, just in time for the holiday season. Economist Max Fraad Wolff says there is a lot of room to cut the deficit instead of these benefits, starting with military which spends more than half the world’s defense budget.

Papantonio: GOP Calls Unemployed Workers “Lazy”

November 7th, 2011. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.

Tom DeLay has lined up an entire cabal of GOP cretins like Rep. Dean Heller from Nevada and Steve King from Iowa, who have expressed their opinion that lazy, shiftless American workers are so thrilled to receive their unemployment checks that they have no incentive to look for work. Its no surprise that Republicans like DeLay were the ones most responsible for moving jobs out of the US to sweatshop havens like Saipan and India. In fact, the little runt actually helped American corporations get tax breaks for outsourcing jobs.

Unemployed Constituents Stand Up to Paul Ryan, Get Arrested.

October 30th, 2011. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.

September 6, 2011. Unemployed constituents, spurned by Paul Ryan on multiple occasions, were galvanized into action the Tuesday following Labor Day. After being unable to convince their representative to schedule a FREE public meeting following a week long sit-in, the members of his district converged on a one time only pay-per-view event far away from the majority of his constituents. At the luncheon, Paul Ryan’s unemployed constituents repeatedly stood to ask him what he was going to do about the jobs crisis. But, instead of addressing his members in need, Ryan had the unemployed escorted out by police and made petty remarks. In one incident, a gentleman in his seventies stood to confront Ryan about his stance on “entitlements” and was grabbed by police. He was then wrestled to the ground while Ryan joked, “Hope he took his blood-pressure medication.” Watch now and visit wisconsinjobsnow.org to demand Ryan hold a REAL meeting with his constituents.

Congressman Geoff Davis: Hearing on Moving from Unemployment Checks to Paychecks

October 14th, 2011. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.

Today’s hearing is on the President’s proposals to help the long-term unemployed get back to work, which are part of his latest jobs plan. There is certainly bipartisan agreement on that goal. But we need to do a better job helping all the unemployed return to work, because today’s short-term unemployed workers risk becoming tomorrow’s long-term unemployed. For example, one of America’s 14 million unemployed workers, Ms. Dawn Deane, will testify shortly about her experience since being laid off in June. She is not “long-term unemployed.” But why should we wait until she reaches that stage before she gets effective help in getting back to work? Yet that is largely what the President’s latest plan proposes, starting with its call to extend unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks for another year. That has a familiar ring because this would be the 10th extension since mid-2008. That’s left a long track record for assessing whether extending unemployment benefits will create jobs, as some have claimed. For instance, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi last year said extending unemployment benefits “is one of the biggest stimuluses to our economy….It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative that you can name.” But in reality, since Federal extended benefits began, the unemployment rate rose from 5.6 to 9.1 percent and over 6 million jobs disappeared. Federal benefits have already added 0 billion to the deficit, and today we are being asked by the President to spend …

The Future Jobs Fund launches in Barnsley as 180 long-term unemployed return to work

September 12th, 2011. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.

From the Barnsley Chronicle, October 9, 2009: ABOUT 180 of Barnsley’s long term unemployed turned up to work on Monday as the Future Jobs Fund came into action. Former drug user Joanne Robinson, 28, of Kelsey Terrace, has not worked for six years but is now working as an engagement support worker for the council. She said: “I’m absolutely over the moon. I’ve been clean for four years now. I’ve turned my life around and I’m motivated myself to get back into work. “It’s just been very hard to find a job. You always get tarred with the same brush if you’re an ex-offender, or an ex-drug user. That’s why this fund is so good for people like me. “I’m going to try and get my foot back on the ladder and get myself back to work. It is a bit daunting, going back after so long. “I hope to come out with some more qualifications and experience behind me and then hopefully find some permanent work the end of it. “They always say it’s easier to find a job once you’re in a job and unfortunately that’s true.” The scheme will create 600 jobs in Barnsley over the next two years. Salaries, all about £12000 a year, will be paid for roughly half by the government and half by their employers, which include the council, Berneslai Homes, NHS Barnsley, Barnsley Hospital, the Fire Service, Barnsley Community Build and Job Centre Plus. Bret Bowman, 36, of Goldthorpe, spent some time abroad and since coming back to the country has been out of work. He is going to be working for the council and …

From Unemployed to Self-Employed: Success Stories

July 22nd, 2011. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.

These were some of the many regional stories featuring successful businesses started by people who had been previously unemployed. They all started their new businesses thanks to the Enterprise Allowance Scheme. The videos were shown in Job Centres across the UK. The bouncing ball certainly caused some fun and consternation. Looking back on the film now, it’s amazing that all these people – none of whom were actors – were able to catch a ball and then talk to camera so naturally and lucidly. Obviously we often needed a lot of takes, and I spent some time coaching each participant to relax and perform well. This video shows regional sections of the films, which were used to make customised versions of the main film, called Kickstart. Regional versions were needed both to show local success stories and also because the scheme had a diferent name in some regions. For example, in Tyne and Wearside the Enterprise Allowance Scheme was called Business Boost, and on the Isle of Wight it was called Island Enterprise. The UK government announced in October 2010 that it is going to relaunch the Enteprise Allowance Scheme. I think that’s a great idea, as the scheme was an innovative way to encourage and assist self-employment as a viable alternative to unemployment. My advice to the government is to keep it the same name across all parts of the country this time, to avoid confusion. Written and Directed by Jon Danzig. © Jon Danzig Look-Hear.com MCMXCII

Fictional March of the Unemployed During Great Depression

May 5th, 2011. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.

In 1932, unemployed veterans marched on Washington, DC demanding payment of a bonus due in the future. The “bonus marchers” were routed by the military on orders of President Hoover. The idea of World War I veterans who had come home as heroes being confronted by the army was a national shock and doomed whatever hope Hoover had for reelection. In this Hollywood version, made on the eve of the New Deal, a fictional president (under the influence of divine inspiration) visits the marchers and promises a public job program similar to job-creation programs of the actual New Deal. Note the explicit reference by one member of the crowd to past veteran service.

As unemployment in the US nears the dreaded 10 per cent mark, 1it is a chart tos chill the bones of any job hunter. Comparing previous recoveries from all 10 American recessions since 1948 to the current financial crisis,. The stark figures show almost no improvement in employment figures in the past year. Some commentators have described the comparison as The scariest job chart ever. pointing to the fact that only the 2001 recession took longer to bring employment back to pre-crisis levels. America went morally bankrupt decades ago, and this is just a sign of that. It will get much worse. A quote from Socrates says it best. Tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society. When up is down, left is right, good is evil, normal is abnormal . what do you expect to happen? Land of the free, and home of the brave. My, Ass!

This is probably redundant for liberals, so they want to change the channel. I’m sure most liberals can recite this word for word. I met three slobs the other day who were bragging that they’re going to be on UI benefits for 99 weeks and that they’re not even looking for employment. These are men who are in their late 40s and have been working for nearly 25 years. They said it’s never been so easy to feed at the public trough than it is under B. Hussein O. Can you believe Liberals actually think that unemployment checks stimulate the economy? One liberal said that for every dollar spent in unemployment, it magically turns into .50 – guess its magic unicorns? Another liberal says that one person spending the unemployment money taken from the paycheck of another, is stimulation – apparently neglecting to factor in the offset effect that the one who was just robbed can no longer spend that money, known as the Law of Opportunity Cost Why do liberals believe that transferring wealth is the same as creating wealth? Do these same liberals stare at flowing fountains, and wonder why they don’t overflow? recirculating money, water, or anything – doesn’t do anything but create an illusion. Isn’t it amazing that liberals can be so easily fooled by illusions? by liberal logic, if everyone was unemployed the economy would …

Sh*t Starting To Get REAL! No Where to Turn for the Unemployed

I interview John about what’s happening in Ca with some of the long term unemployed. You can hear the desperation in his voice as families run out of options. I will meet with him later on and see if can create a series. www.rantrave.com The results of a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted between Dec. 21, 2010, and Jan. 9, 2011, and released last Thursday, seem to indicate that many unemployed Americans are outrageously optimistic, if not completely in denial, about the severity of the current unemployment crisis in the US “Despite today’s nearly double-digit unemployment rate, 4 in 10 unemployed Americans expect to get a job in the next four weeks and one in three underemployed have the same expectations with respect to obtaining a full-time job.” If this Gallup pole data provides us with an accurate reflection of popular opinion among the unemployed, then 40% of the 15+ million people collecting Unemployment Insurance actually believe that a job is magically being whipped up just for them. While 4 in 10, or 40%, may not seem like much at first, you must consider that for all those people to actually reach this goal then roughly 6 million jobs need to be created — by next week, or so.
