Military is job of last resort for unemployed masses
March 5th, 2010. Published under Unemployment. No Comments.
02/15/09 By: DH Williams @ 1:39 PM – EST – Many have accurately predicted that the convergence of an imploding economy, unemployment and secret trillion dollar bailouts would lead to more defense spending and the expansion of the Armed Forces. And they were right because as more people lose their jobs all branches of the military are finding it easier to meet recruitment goals. Source: MSNBC The tough job market is making some jobs a lot easier. As the economy goes down, military recruitment goes up. Its a sellers market, as one Marine recruiter put it, and thats with military action in Iraq and Afghanistan. For a change, the Army doesnt have to go out as much to try to attract recruits because more and more are walking through the door. One recruiting officer noticed that theyre a little older than the norm. About 27, 38, 36 years old, all the way up to almost 40, said Sgt. Jermaine Martin. President Obamas plan to increase the military by 100000 is now possible as military service becomes the job of last resort. Obamas defense department is even recruiting soldiers from what they call temporary immigrants, to give them a shot at citizenship. Using waivers for high school graduation and criminal convictions the Pentagon hopes to recruit 1000 into the US Armed Forces this year.

U.S. Consumers Fell Behind on Credit Card Payments in November
January 1st, 2010. Published under Scams. No Comments.
According to Moody’s Investors Services, credit card debt charge-offs and the delinquency rate both rose in November. The up-side is that the dollar amount of card balances is now lower than it was a year ago. “ The charge-off rate on U.S. credit cards, as measured by Moody’s Credit Card Index, rose to 10.56% last month after falling for the two previous months. October’s charge-off rate was 10.04%. The charge-off rate measures those credit card account balances written off as uncollectable, as an annualized percentage of total outstanding principal balance. The record-high of 10.76% was reached in June. ” – USA Today My best advice is to close credit card accounts, pay off the balance and not use credit cards at all. My wife and I cut the credit card “cord” nearly 5 years ago. We now only use debit card, cash and check. The up-side is don’t buy things we don’t need, and we save for large purchases. Our mortgage is the last thing we have tied to credit. We are working hard to get that paid off, so we can be 100% debt (and credit) free. Do it, it’s the best financial decision you will ever make and yes you can live without credit cards.

Good News – Bad News Consumers Shed 21.5 Billion in Debt in July
September 10th, 2009. Published under Fraud, Scams. No Comments.
According to published reports, consumers in the month of July cut $21.5 in outstanding debt. This means consumers are paying off debt, saving more money and not adding to what they currently owe to others. On the down side spending is what drives our economy. For retailers consumer cutting back on spending with credit affects their bottom line. Personally speaking I feel that consumers cutting down on using credit is a good thing. The only problem is once the economy gets back toward normalcy consumer spending will rise and so will consumer debt. As individuals we tend to forget bad things quickly and fall back into old habits. USA Today has a good write up on the drop in consumer debt . Long-term, the trend “puts (consumers) in a healthier financial position” by trimming interest costs and encouraging investments for “future needs like college education and retirement,” says John Ryding, chief economist of RDQ Economics. In the short run, though, “This does not bode well for a significant, sustained rebound in real consumer spending,” Steven Wood, chief economist for Insight Economics, said in a report. – USA Today I hope that consumers continue to save money and rely less on credit, ultimately this will strength our economy as there will be less credit risk floating around.

American Express Blue – Raising all Interest Rates Even Old Balances – Jacking Consumers Around Again
August 14th, 2009. Published under Fraud. No Comments.
American Express Centurion Bank (AMEX) is really sticking it hard to American Express Blue card holders (every single one of them). There is nothing card holders can do about it either, you are at American Express’ mercy and they aren’t having any of that. Standard APR is going from fixed rate 11.99% to Prime Rate plus 11.99%. Rate as of Aug 1, 15.24% (this is applies to new purchases AND ALL BALANCES PREVIOUS) (aka variable interest rate) APR for Cash Advances will be 21.99% plus prime. APR for Late Payment will be 23.99% plus prime. Late fees for less than $250 will be $19, greater than $39. Read the full story on the Consumerist What do you want to bet that eventually all American Express card holder are going to have their interest rates and penalties jacked up. Well the cards that allow you to carry a balance that is. While this arbitrary tactic may boost American Expresses profits for a short while, what it will ultimately do is cause consumers to use credit less, especially if other credit card issuers do that same. Imagine if consumers that used credit cards, stopped using them and went back to using cash. The entire credit card industry would go into turmoil and the consumer would end up with the upper hand. My wife and I weaned ourselves off of credit cards about three years ago and haven’t had any problems with making purchases (we just make wiser choices now). No interest rate increases, no late fees and no sudden arbitrary fees at the whim of a credit card company. Yep it’s nice not to have financial crutches called credit cards. I like to call it financial freedom. My best advice: Cut up those American Express cards and do whatever you have to do to pay off the balance in a hurry, get out from under American Express debt. On top of that (This Just in News 9/14/2009) via the Associated Press Do you have an American Express Credit Card? Chances are your identity was just stolen. Bank of America See the Light – No More Forced Arbitration
August 14th, 2009. Published under Fraud. No Comments.
I’ll have to say it’s good to see large banks and credit card issuers beginning to see that forced arbitration is not a very good idea (never was actually). Bank of American (BOA) announced this week that it is dropping mandatory consumer arbitration. Read the full story on the Wall Street Journal . Of course the lack of arbitration will most likely result in new hidden fees and other ways of boosting the banks profit margin. I for one stopped using credit cards several years ago, so the news doesn’t affect me, my family or my business. However, it’s good to see that consumers are finally winning some ground when it comes to credit card companies. I also think that Bank of American and other credit card issues are seeing the “writing on the wall” and are hoping to avoid class-action lawsuits such as those currently being filed against the National Arbitration Forum (NAF) and many debt collection law firms. Time will tell, I guess.
