Cyber Security: Why Is So Important?

November 19th, 2009. Published under Fraud, Scams. No Comments.

Do we actually need cyber security? I strongly believe that we do. Everybody has their own thoughts on cyber security, some of which are valid facts, and some of which are misconceptions. The Internet is a dynamic technology and you can never predict the changes that are constantly occurring. Furthermore,  every change can lead to more dangerous threats that had not been previously imagined. That is why there have been number of incidents in the past where the Internet has been used as the medium for some serious crimes which are named as ‘Cyber Crimes’. If proper means are not used to tackle this problem then the rate of cyber crime will just continue to increase. Below are some of the reasons behind the need for cyber security – 1.) Who are hackers and what do they do? We all are aware of hackers . But do you actually know how they operate? A hacker could be anyone. He might be your business rival, your friend or any other person who is trying to hijack your computer’s resources. They somehow enter into your computer with the help of many malicious programs and scripts, all of which can be found on the internet or easily coded by someone with a little know how. Once he succeeds in hijacking your computer, then he can misuse your confidential information such as e-mail accounts, bank accounts, credit cards and any other useful information he finds stored on your system. 2.) Online fraud and identity theft. Cyber criminals follow a number of techniques in order to acquire e-mail Ids, credit card numbers, bank account numbers and passwords which are then misused by them. These kinds of scams are known as ‘ phishing ‘. These criminals cheat people by pretending to be spokespeople of big organisations or deceased millionaires and sending emails to their victims which will try to trick them into revealing confidential information. 3.) Cyber thefts are increasing daily. Conventional thefts can be compensated by insurance cover but once you lose your confidential data from your computer, no-one can help you. These kinds of incidents are not only restricted to individuals but huge companies and institutions are falling prey to cyber theft too. 4.) Computer viruses can really mess up your system. Viruses can not only slow your system down, they can make it crash too. There are number of ways in which viruses can enter your computer. One of them is through accessing insecure web sites and downloading infected files. Its not only household computers that can be infected as even big business can be affected too. For example, in 1999 the Melissa virus lead to the termination of many services in Microsoft and other huge companies. 5.) Spyware keeps tabs on your activity. Spyware is a form of malware that can enter your computer and install itself automatically. It is not only meant to spy on you but also steal information from your computer. The dangerous part is that people do not even realize its presence on their computers. Some reports suggest that about 92% of computers are infected by spyware and that users are unaware of it! 6.) Adware is annoying. The main purpose of adware is to pop up unwanted ads as you are surfing the Internet. This can quickly become extremely annoying and frustrating. Nowadays adware is often integrated with spyware in order to exploit your computer to great heights. These are just some of the different ways cyber criminals steal your resources and information. They are always a step ahead and the security industry is forever trying to keep up with their new plans and codes. Therefore, it is very necessary to protect your system for all the threats caused by cyber criminals. Wouldn’t you agree?

Securing Your Brand New Windows 7 System

October 21st, 2009. Published under Fraud, Scams. No Comments.

The age of Windows 7 is upon us as the new operating system from Microsoft will be released in the next few hours. As usual there will be the normal people who update as soon as the new system is available on shelves or is ready to legitimately be downloaded. There are also others who will update when they get a new computer over time. Windows 7 Security Whatever type of person you are, it will pay to know how to secure your new operating system from all of the dangers that the Internet can contain. With the releases of this new operating system a lot of the old exploits will be made null and void. But, as with any expansive piece of new software being released, new exploits will be found and taken advantage of. It will pay for you to be prepared in the long run. Securing Windows 7 is not too much different than securing Windows Vista or Windows XP. Again it will take a combination of the latest software and the (much needed) common sense on your part to keep your operating system secured. Antivirus The first thing that you will want to do is to make sure that you have the latest version of antivirus that you use on your computer. Microsoft has been working with all of the biggest vendors that provide antivirus solutions , so that they could keep their software updated for the new OS. Now might be a good time to think about switching to one of these vendors for a short time while the other companies race to catch up. You do not want to use an outdated and incomplete antivirus system on your new operating system. Firewall Microsoft has also upgraded the choices that you now have with their integrated firewall that comes built into the system. It is now easier than ever to allow certain pieces of software to talk to an outside network with your permission. The outbound and inbound network traffic analyzer has been much improved. The whole program has been made more flexible, which was a major complaint in the past. As I said with the antivirus if you use a third party firewall , then you might want to go with one of the major companies until the smaller companies have had a chance to catch up. Until they catch up the built-in Firewall that Windows 7 provides is a decent solution. Spyware Spyware will still end up being a problem with your new system, even though they have taken steps to try to eliminate the problem. Their solution to the problem, Windows Defender, has been upgraded and has been receiving major kudos this time around from the security community. For a short amount of time they will have the inside track as being one of the better spyware solutions until the others have caught up. One of the best in the business, Ad-Aware, I did not see on the list of companies that Microsoft has been working with. This will give them a temporary disadvantage but not much of one since beta copies of Windows 7 have been released all through the development cycle. So I hope this article gives you a good understanding on what’s available and how to secure your brand new Windows 7 system. Not too much has changed but the security has been raised to a new level.

Old Macdonald’s Guide To Avoiding Pharming

August 28th, 2009. Published under Fraud. No Comments.

Old MacDonald had a farm, ee-eye, ee-eye oh And on that farm he had a case of identity theft, ee-eye, ee-eye oh With an email, email here and an email, email there Here an email, there an email Everywhere an email, email Old MacDonald had a farm, ee-eye, ee-eye oh Oooh-ah, Old Macdonald here and today I wants to be telling ya’s all about Pharming . Pharming, ya see, is somefing I knows a lot about. I ain’t talkin’ about ‘farming’ which is all about me sowing me seed, oooh-ar, no sirs this here pharming is somefing altogether different. I hopes you alls got good protection for your computers already see. Ya need a scarecrow to ward off those pesky antiviral things and those bugs ya see. What I means, like, is antivirus programs and antispyware cos they will keep your vegetable patch safe from all sorts of harm. Oooh-ah. Once you’s got ya field in order ya almost home but pests they are smart ya see. Them there pharmers are jealous of you’s and they want your fields all to themselves. Ooooh-eck. Now it don’t be making many odds how good ya scarescrow is cos it ain’t got stop the pharmers, no sir. You’s need to have far more smarts so I’ll leave ya’s with the olde webmaster who speaks proper city talk like you folks and he’ll tell you’s more. Oooh-ah. 4 WAYS FOR CITY FOLK TO AVOID GETTING THEIR HANDS DIRTY WITH PHARMING Thankyou Old MacDonald, I almost understood what you were talking about! Avoiding pharming, which is a type of identity theft, is reasonably simple. As Old MacDonald mentioned though, antivirus programs, antispyware and registry cleaners are all for nought against this crime. Common sense, however, will take you a long way. As will these tips – 1. Pay attention. You should never enter your personal information on a website that isn’t secure. You can determine whether a website is secure or not by looking at the beginning of it’s URL – if it starts with ‘https’ rather than the more common ‘http’ then it is indeed secure. Such sites should also display a padlock icon somewhere in your browser’s status bar. If a site isn’t secure then they are either a little fishy or they simply don’t deserve your business. Move along. 2. Choose your browser wisely. Switch to Mozilla’s Firefox browser . Do it now. You can then add the ‘petname’ plugin which allows you to assign a pet name to any site that you visit. If you then visit one of those sites which is in fact an imposter of the original then you will be notified. Firefox is also far more secure than other browsers I could mention. 3. Check security certificates. If your browser warns you that the key certificate on the site you are visiting has expired then bail out. The same goes for certificates from ‘unknown’ publishers too. Entering your personal information into such sites is just asking for trouble. Don’t do it. No, really, don’t do it. 4. Secure your router. If you connect to the internet through a router then you really must ensure that the router itself is secure . Routers are shipped from the factory with a default password which will be common to all of that model, maybe even common to the entire range of routers from that manufacturer. Funnily enough, this means they are rather easy to guess if you don’t change them. Change your router’s password but make sure you change it to something that is secure. After all, you wouldn’t want to make a bad password mistake , would you? These simple measures will make you far far safer from pharming. Do them and you can be better than the pharmer.

National Health Care Reform – A Convoluted Prostitution of our Constitutional Rights

July 30th, 2009. Published under Fraud, Scams. No Comments.

I am one of the nations uninsured. Back in November 2008 my wife broke her foot, the healing process was quite long (about 6 months). We paid out of pocket for the physicians care, x-rays and the walking cast boots she had to wear. Being uninsured we found that everyone we dealt with gave us a very nice cash discount for not using insurance. What a blessing that was. For the last two years my family has lived below the national poverty line. Things are tough. Both my wife and I are self-employed and we felt the economy going downhill nearly three years ago. In fact last year my wife closed her business (hair salon) and went to work for another salon. Closing the salon got rid of a huge amount of overhead. However, our combined income dropped because consumers were spending less and doing without. So far June and July has been the worst for us than we can ever remember in the past. We are just barely squeaking by, if you can even call it getting by. More like doing without many, many things. The main point of this is, I and my family cannot afford to buy insurance, nor do we want to have someone decide for us. It’s either pay our house payment, food and utilities or purchase health insurance. I bet you can guess where our money goes. If I don’t buy insurance, according to H.R. 3200 ( 1,017 page Bill in PDF format ) I could be penalized. Hey congress, just exactly where are you going to get money from me if I don’t? Are you going to force me to default on my home in order to pay, or are you going to garnish my bank account (then I can’t pay my bills or buy food for my family). Just exactly what are you (Congressional) idiots thinking? Congress can’t even (or won’t) fix Medicare or Social Security. Try fixing the things that are broken before you legislate more things that you will break and can’t fix. Put that in your pocket for a while and think about it. I don’t want anyone to dictate how, when or where I and my family get healthcare. I am a citizen of the United States and I have a freedom of choice. It doesn’t matter how much honey and perfume you pour over this bill, it still stinks as bad or worse than the TARP bailout from earlier this year.

National Arbitration Forum [NAF] to Cease Administering All Consumer Arbitrations

July 20th, 2009. Published under Business Scams, Scams. No Comments.

The below is a press release from Business Wire. No matter how the PR folks spin it, it’s still good news for consumers subjected to forced arbitration. I think they are ceasing consumer arbitration because of the suit they just settled with the state of Minnesota and are hoping other Attorney General’s or the Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ) won’t delve deeper into their questionable tactics or who is investing in the NAF. No matter the case or cause it is a *WIN* for consumers. I do sincerely hope that the FTC does investigate all involved with the National Arbitration Forum as I do believe that consumers were/are being hornswoggled by the NAF and by those associated with it. — American Consumers to Lose Affordable Access to Justice through Nation’s Largest Administrator of Consumer Arbitration Disputes MINNEAPOLIS–( BUSINESS WIRE )–The National Arbitration Forum (FORUM), the largest U.S. administrator of consumer arbitrations, today announced that it will voluntarily cease to administer consumer arbitration disputes as of Friday, July 24, 2009, as part of a settlement agreement with the Minnesota Attorney General. “The National Arbitration Forum remains committed to consumer arbitration as the best and most affordable option for consumers to resolve disputes quickly and efficiently. However, the FORUM lacks the necessary resources to defend against increasing challenges to arbitration on all fronts, including from state Attorneys General and the class action trial bar,” said Forthright CEO Mike Kelly. “Mounting legal costs, a challenging economic climate, and increased legislative uncertainty surrounding the future of arbitration have prompted the FORUM to exit the consumer arbitration arena. At this time, the costs of providing consumer arbitration services far exceed the revenue generated. Until Congress resolves the legal and legislative uncertainty the cost is simply too high for users and providers of consumer arbitration.” Legislative proposals pending in both houses of Congress threaten to eliminate pre-dispute arbitration as an effective means of alternative dispute resolution. The Arbitration Fairness Act of 2009 (S. 931/H.R. 1020) would invalidate every pre-dispute contractual arbitration agreement that is part of a consumer, financial or franchise dispute – in effect, every contract. The Fairness in Nursing Home Arbitration Act (S. 512/H.R. 1237) would eliminate pre-dispute mandatory arbitration in all nursing home contracts. Legislation before the House to create a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency (H.R. 3126) addresses arbitration and would give broad regulatory authority to restrict or eliminate all consumer arbitrations. “The National Arbitration Forum provides fair and affordable access to justice to American consumers regardless of size of their claims. Without access to arbitration, consumer disputes will now be forced into an overcrowded and underfunded legal system, where many consumers who cannot afford attorneys will have to navigate complex court procedures,” continued Kelly. “The consequence to American consumers is that there will be no meaningful alternative to costly and unpredictable litigation.” Notably, nothing in the Minnesota Attorney General’s complaint alleges that arbitration proceedings administered by the FORUM are unfair; the fairness of arbitration is ensured by the independence of the neutral arbitrators. National Arbitration Forum consumer arbitration claims are decided by an independent panel of more than 1,600 highly experienced and impartial legal professionals, including former judges and experienced attorneys. FORUM neutrals are bound to a code of professional ethics, and decide cases outside of any influence from the FORUM or the other parties. About the National Arbitration Forum (FORUM) Founded in 1986, the National Arbitration Forum (FORUM) is a world leader in arbitration and mediation services. The FORUM provides accessible civil justice through the recruitment, selection, and management of a highly experienced and distinguished panel of over 1,600 former judges and seasoned lawyers. Now optimized by Forthright, the FORUM is the faster, lower cost, and superior alternative to litigation, that ensures parties receive the same outcomes they would in court. www.adrforum.com
